Agriculture is considered as the backbone of Indian economy. The contribution of agriculture to GDP is less than twenty per cent. But the significance of the sector in India is mostly attributed to the huge work force it employs. Agriculture and the allied sector proved to be the most resilient to the Covid-19 shock as it registered a growth of 3.6 per cent in 2020-21 and improved to 3.9 per cent in 2021-22, driving the overall Indian economy's real GDP expansion of 9.2 per cent in 2021-22.

Agriculture plays a crucial role in poverty reduction in India. Since the objective of doubling farmers’ income has become the mission of the government, the sector is seeing transformation on a large scale. The overall demand for chemical fertilisers, organic inputs, pesticides, machines and services is bound to increase. Demand for processed food and exotic food products have also propelled agriculture sector. This has created immense opportunities for agriculture sector in India.

The agriculture sector of India had the highest number of employees that amounted to nearly 152 million as of financial year 2021. As new sectors are emerging the requirement of quality human resources is bound to increase in agriculture segment. India needs more progressive and holistic curriculum to match the requirements of recruiters.
